Daniel Copley

Daniel is a commercial litigation specialist with experience representing clients across a variety of sectors in claims for breach of fiduciary duties, breach of contract, professional negligence, misleading and deceptive conduct and claims arising from large corporate collapses.

Daniel has experience with large-scale and multi-jurisdictional proceedings. He is a dedicated and trusted team member, recognised by clients and colleagues for his attention to detail, diligence, technical skills and commerciality.

Daniel joined LK in 2018. He has a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Adelaide, and an Advanced Certificate in Insolvency from Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association (ARITA). He is admitted in the Supreme Court of South Australia, High Court of Australia and Federal Court of Australia.

Project Highlights

Western Desert Resources Liquidation

Represented the liquidators of Western Desert Resources, an iron mining operation in the Northern Territory that collapsed with creditors in the order of AU$200 million and subsequent liquidator’s avoidance actions including preference claims exceeding AU$100 million.

Cargill v Viterra

Represented a multinational agribusiness in the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria concerning a trial judgment of AU$293 million arising from the sale of a subsidiary.

Confidential Professional Negligence Claim

Working with an offshore firm to defend another professional services firm in relation to allegations of professional negligence.

Joint Venture Dispute

Represented a co-venturer in a dispute arising out of a joint venture to build a AU$70 million apartment building in Adelaide’s CBD in respect of breaches of contract and fiduciary duty.

Dispute relating to Public Lighting Consulting Services

Representing an energy consultancy firm in proceedings in the Supreme Court of South Australia against 62 respondents regarding the amounts paid for public street lighting services.

Shareholder Dispute

Represented an employee of a financial services firm in relation to a dispute over equity holding arising from the construction of a shareholder agreement.
